هَلis there غَيرُother than قَلبيmy heart لكمfor you مأوىa refuge وأَوطانُand homelands
O departing ones, who yet dwell within the heart,
have you shelter and homelands anywhere but in my heart?
خذواtake منfrom الأَرضthe earth أَنّىwherever شئتمyou wish نُزُلاًlodging

Take lodging anywhere on earth you please,
for you dwell in the heart's innermost core.

And you, O camel-driver of the litters that departed,
bearing moons and boughs this evening,

by God, if those who departed have no choice
but a resting place in al-Ḥimā where the litters find shelter,

then turn toward the eastern side of Wādī al-Raml in Iḍam,
where there are saxaul trees, pools, laurels, and moringas.

Perhaps they may alight at a stopping place there
where they once alighted, when Time was glad.
أَيّامَin the days when أَختالُI strutted فيin بردthe mantle of الصِباyouth مَرَحاًmerrily
والعمرُwhile life غضٌّwas tender وصفوand the pure joy of العيشliving فَينانُluxuriant
In those days I strutted merrily in youth's mantle,
while life was tender and its pure delight luxuriant.
لاmay not أَوحشَleave lonely اللّهُGod منone ناءٍfar away تؤرِّقُنيkeeps me awake
ذكراهhis memory وهوwhile he is خليُّuntroubled in البالmind وَسنانُdrowsy
May God spare that distant one loneliness; I am kept awake
by his memory, while he is carefree and drowsy.
أَذوىwithered وَريقthe tender foliage of شَبابيmy youth بعدَهin his absence ظمأٌthirst
وَغصنُهwhile his bough منwith مياهِthe waters of الحُسنbeauty ريّانُwell-watered
Thirst in his absence withered the tender foliage of my youth,
while his bough is lush with the waters of beauty.
حَيّاmay greet بهwith him اللَهُGod يَوماًone day روحَthe soul of عاشقهhis lover
فإنَّماfor only هوhe للأَرواحfor souls رَيحانُsweet basil
May God one day greet his lover's soul with him,
for he is nothing but sweet basil for souls.
قدindeed جلَّis exalted فيin حُسنهhis beauty عنbeyond أَنbeing يقاسَcompared بهwith him
ظبيٌa gazelle وَبَدرٌand a full moon وأَغصانٌand boughs وكثبانُand sand dunes
He is far too exalted in beauty to be matched by
a gazelle, a full moon, boughs, and sand dunes.
لِلَّهby God كَمhow much فيهin him مِنof حُسنٍbeauty يُدِلُّhe takes pride بهin it
لوif only كانَwere يشفعُto accompany ذاكthat الحسنَbeauty إِحسانُkindness
By God, how much beauty he has to pride himself on!
If only kindness accompanied that beauty!
ياO عاذليmy reproacher فيfor هَواهlove of him لاdo not ترمseek شططاًexcess
دَعنيleave me فعذلُكfor your reproach شانٌone thing والهوىand love شانُanother thing
O you who chide me for loving him, do not go to extremes;
leave me; your reproach is one thing, and love another.
وَاللَهby God ماnot جادَلargued with العذالَthe reproachers عاشقُهhis lover
إلّاexcept وقامand there arose لهfor him بالحسنِthrough beauty بُرهانُa proof
By God, his lover has never argued with the reproachers
without beauty furnishing proof in his defense.
وأَينand how far منfrom سمعيَmy hearing اللاحيthe censurer وزُخرفُهُand his gilded speech
وليwhile I have منfrom الحُبِّlove سُلطانٌa sovereign وَشيطانُand a devil
And how far from my ears are the censurer and his gilded words,
when love is my sovereign and my demon!
وَلَيلةًand one night باتspent the night بَدريmy full moon وهوwhile he was مُعتنقيembracing me
فيهاduring it سُروراًjoyfully وبدرُwhile the full moon of الأُفقthe horizon غَيرانُjealous
And one night my full moon lay embracing me,
in joy, while the moon on the horizon was jealous.
فظلَّthen he continued يَنقَعُquenching منfrom قَلبيmy heart غَليلَthe burning thirst of جوىًanguished love
إذsince كانَthere had been منfrom قبلbefore إِعراضٌaversion وهجرانُand estrangement
Then he kept quenching the burning thirst of passion in my heart,
for before there had been aversion and estrangement,
حتّىuntil بداappeared الفَجرُdawn فاِرتاعتthen took fright كواكبُهاits stars
كأَنَّهاas though they were نَقَدٌshort-legged sheep وَالفَجرُand dawn سرحانُa wolf
until dawn appeared and the night's stars took fright,
as though they were little sheep and dawn a wolf.
فَقامَthen he rose يَثنيswaying قواماًa figure زانَهgraced it هَيَفٌa slender waist
كأَنَّهas though he were بِمُدامwith the wine of الوصلunion نَشوانُintoxicated
Then he rose, swaying a form graced with a slender waist,
as though drunk on the wine of union.
وَراحَand he departed وَالدَمعُwhile the tears منfrom أَجفانِهhis eyelids دُرَرٌpearls
وَرحتُand I departed والدَمعُwhile the tears مِنfrom جفنيّmy two eyelids عِقيانُpure gold
And he departed, the tears from his eyelids pearls,
and I departed, the tears from my eyelids pure gold.
لِلَّهGod bless أَزمانُtimes of وَصلٍunion قدalready مَضَتhave passed وقضتand decreed
أَنthat لاnot تَعودَreturn بهاwith them ماas long as عشتُI live أَزمانُages
God bless those times of union, now past, which decreed
that no future age should bring them back as long as I live.
مرَّتthey passed فَلَمand did not يَبقَremain ليfor me إلّاexcept تذكُّرُهاremembering them

They passed, and nothing remained for me but remembering them;
and remembrance of what has passed is the sign of longing.

So, O time of al-Liwā, hail to you—what a time you were!
And may pouring rain never cease over al-Liwā and the hillside.
