O dear folk of love, what I seek is hard to win

From Sulayma, and her rejection has wasted me away.

The gaze sends a volley of arrows into my breast,

And separation fuels a fire within my heart.

Ah, may God shower those dear little nights among the tents with rain!

Do you think what passed in them will return?

By the Prophet, my heart has not forgotten love.

Here are my tears and my longing as witnesses.

How can I forget, when I have not attained my wishes

From my beloved, nor gained a meeting?

Ah, long have my sickness and wasting endured

From the cruelty of that languid-eyed young gazelle.

No, by Him who decreed separation for us,

    My patience cannot survive abandonment.

Nothing quenches my burning longing and thirst

Except a sip from his cool, smiling mouth.

Since the meeting-place is far away, my sleep comes in snatches,

And my tears stream down my cheek in bucketfuls.

So when, I wonder, will the dwellings draw near,

    And the hearts' delights arrive,

    And fate undo this bondage,

    And joy dispel these sorrows,

And the beauty-marked tormentor grant my wishes

Through union with him, and bestow good fortune upon me?
