No sooner had the night of union grown sweet than it began

offering us musk and kindling ambergris.

And with the wing of its darkness it clothed our shoulders

in a musk-colored mantle, patterned with stars like dinars.

And when its bright stars appeared, it revealed to us

flowers that burst open in the sky and bloomed.

It hid our whereabouts from the talebearers, so

the watcher did not know of us there—may he never know!

I praise it, grateful for a favor it bestowed—

no, rather, favors that deserve thanks.

For how often I traveled by night beneath its wing, concealed,

more hidden than the visiting dream-vision when it passes by night,

until, through it, I fulfilled love's desires,

and at dawn praised the outcome of traveling by night.

Ah, what a night it was—it put to shame

with its deep darkness the radiant morning!

What way is there to meet him, now that

my home is Berar, and his is Umm al-Qura?
