Is she a sun whose radiance rises in the darkness?

She is draped in ample robes of beauty.

She is unapproachable: favor is forbidden

with her, while displeasure from her is freely permitted.

She slips away whenever the lover seeks union with her,

as a darting gazelle of Wajra takes flight.

    وَلكنَّ شَيطانَ الملامة نازغُ

    Neither forgetfulness nor aversion has turned her from me;

rather, the devil of reproach is stirring discord.

My reprover seeks to have me seek to forget her,

yet my heart does not stray from the lovers’ path.

Had my heart been free, I would have obeyed him,

but it is brimful of love, empty of all else.

    يُراوغني في حبِّها وأراوِغُ

    God help me against a censurer who rebukes me for love;

he tries to outwit me over loving her, and I try to outwit him.

Had the reprover tasted love’s flavor, there would be none

to chew upon the lovers’ honor.

They say, “Do not busy your heart with love.”

Yet nothing is uglier than an idle lover.

Far from it! I have not paid passion its dues,

even if I am thought excessive in passion.

I am smitten with a maiden of full, supple limbs, whose beauty

reaches the furthest limits of loveliness.

She shone forth, too glorious for her light to be rivaled

by full moons or rising suns.

As though the redness upon her cheeks

    had her beauty as its dyer, drawing on the lover’s heartblood;

as though the mole’s blackness on her cheek’s expanse

had love of her as its goldsmith, working from the heart’s core.

I excelled through my poetry’s beautiful portrayal of her,

so the eminent poets grudgingly conceded my precedence.

By my life, were her home not in Tihamah,

neither Khulays nor Rabigh there would have stirred my longing.

Had she aided my heart with the antidote of her saliva,

no stinging asp from her hair would have harmed it.

Even if her lover chokes under the watcher’s eye,

yet his draught from love’s watering place goes smoothly down.
