أَماindeed وَالهَوىby love حِلفاًas an oath وَلَستُand I am not بحانِثan oath-breaker
لماcertainly not أَناI لِلعَهدِof the covenant القَديمold بناكِثِa breaker
Indeed, by love I swear, and I am no oath-breaker:
Though I swore to love, I'm no oath-breaker
I am certainly no betrayer of the old covenant.
For I'm still true to that ancient vow
يحدِّثُهاhe tells her الواشيthe slanderer بأَنّيthat I سَلوتُهاI have forgotten her
لَقَدindeed حدَّثَreported الواشيthe slanderer بأَعظمof the greatest حادثِevent
The slanderer tells her that I have forgotten her;
The gossip told her I've stopped loving
Indeed, the slanderer has reported a most momentous event.
Yet he spoke of something graver now
وَماand not عَلِمتshe knew أَنّيthat I تفرَّدتُI was unrivaled فيin الهَوىlove
فأَنّىso how لهاfor her مِثليsomeone like me بثانٍas a second وَثالثِand a third
And she did not know that I am unrivaled in love;
I never thought love made me unique
So how could she find a second and a third like me?
So how could she find none like me, or other two or three?
بُليتُI was afflicted بفَدمٍwith a dullard لَيسَdoes not يَعرِفُknow ماwhat الهَوىlove
وآخرَand another عنfor سِرِّthe secret of المَحَبَّةlove باحثِsearching
I have been afflicted with a dullard who does not know what love is,
I'm plagued by a fool who knows not of love
And another who searches for the secret of love.
Or one who questions love’s mystery
يسائلُنيhe asks me هَلwhether للصَبابةfor passionate longing باعِثٌa cause
فَقُلتُso I said نعمyes عِنديfor me لهاfor it أَلفُa thousand باعِثِcauses
He asks me whether passionate longing has a cause;
"Does passion move the youth?" he asks
So I said, 'Yes—for me, it has a thousand causes.'
"For me," I said, "a thousand passions seethe"
توزَّعَwas divided قَلبيmy heart بينbetween خَدٍّa cheek مُضرَّجٍcrimson-tinted
وَجَفنٍand an eyelid كَليلِlanguid الطَرفِthe gaze بالسِحرwith magic نافِثِbreathing out
My heart was divided between a crimson cheek,
My heart is divided between rosy cheek
And an eyelid, languid in its gaze, breathing magic,
And languid eyelid when dawn comes to wake
وَخمرةِand wine of حُبٍّlove عُتِّقتwas aged قَبلَbefore آدمٍAdam
فَكانَso was حَديثاًrecent عندَهاcompared with it عَهدُthe age of يافِثِJapheth
And the wine of love, aged before Adam;
Vintage wine of love, decanted before Adam
So Japheth's age was recent beside it.
So she deemed our love an ancient bequest
سَكِرتُI grew drunk بهاon it فاِرتحتُand so I thrilled منfrom فَرطِthe excess of نَشوَتيmy rapture

I grew drunk on it, and in my overflowing rapture I thrilled
I'm drunk with her, sated with joy
To the throbbing of the second strings and the clashing of the third.
At the pounding pulse and the clasping thighs
وَبنتand a daughter of كِرامٍnoble folk رحتُI became منتشياًintoxicated بهاwith her
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle اِنتَشىbecame intoxicated غَيريsomeone other than me بأمِّon the mother of الخَبائِثِevils
And I grew intoxicated with a daughter of noble folk,
A noble girl with whom I reveled
Whenever another grew drunk on the mother of evils.
While others caroused with the harlot caste
كلِفتُI became enamored بهاof her وَالعمرwhile life مُقتبلُthe first bloom of الصِباyouth
وَلَمand had not تَنتَهِبplundered شَمليmy union صَروفُthe turns of الحَوادِثِevents
I became enamored of her while my life was in youth's first bloom,
She claimed me while my youth still gathered
And the turns of events had not yet plundered my union.
Before the fates could wreak their havoc
حججتُI made pilgrimage الىto داعيthe summoner of الغَرامpassionate love مُلبِّياًanswering the call
وَلَمand not أَكُI was فيin حجّيmy pilgrimage إليهto him برافِثِindulging in lewdness
I made a pilgrimage to love's summoner, answering the call,
I answered love's call, readily obeying
And on my pilgrimage to him I indulged in no lewdness.
No stubborn walker on that pilgrimage was I
ولَمand did not أَكتَرِثI care فيin الحُبِّlove منabout لومthe blame of لائِمٍa faultfinder
وَلكنbut سَماعُhearing اللومblame إِحدىone of الكَوارِثِthe calamities
And in love I paid no heed to a faultfinder's blame,
I cared not for the critic's blame in love
But hearing blame is one of the calamities.
Yet hearing blame is still calamity
وَلِلَّهand to God (exclamation) عَهدٌa time فرَّقَscattered البَينُparting شَملَهits union
وَعاثَتand wreaked havoc بهupon it أَيديthe hands of اللَياليthe nights العوابثِmeddling
And, O God, what a time—parting scattered its union,
By God, the years have sundered our bond
And the hands of meddling nights wreaked havoc upon it.
And the nights' caprice has ravaged it away
فأَصبَحَso became صَبريmy patience راحِلاًdeparting عنfrom مَقَرِّهits dwelling
وَقَدand already كُنتُI was أَدريI know أَنَّهthat it غَيرُnot لابِثِremaining
So my patience departed from its dwelling,
My patience left its dwelling place
And I had already known that it would not stay.
And I knew it would not linger overlong
فَقُلتُso I said لِقَلبيto my heart كَيفَhow حالُكَyour state قالit said ليto me
دَعِleave off القَولَtalking إِنّيindeed I بعدهمafter them غيرُnot ماكِثِremaining
So I said to my heart, 'How are you?' It said to me:
I said to my heart, "How fare you now?"
'Leave off talking; after them, I will not remain.'
It said, "Spare your words, I'll stay no more."
