لِلَّه دَرُّ معاشرٍ آلفتُهم

لِلَّه دَرُّ معاشرٍ آلفتُهم

فحويتُ خَصلَ المجد في إِيلافهم

فحويتُ خَصلَ المجد في إِيلافهم

How splendid were the people I befriended!

For God's sake, I cherished companions I befriended,

And through friendship with them I won the prize of glory.

I contained within me the essence of glory through befriending them,

ذَهَبوا فأَخلَفَت اللَيالي عنهم

ذَهَبوا فأَخلَفَت اللَيالي عنهم

قَوماً يَرَون الجودَ في إِخلافِهم

قَوماً يَرَون الجودَ في إِخلافِهم

They departed, and the nights replaced them with

They left and the nights replaced them,

people who see generosity in breaking their promises.

A people who see generosity in their legacy,

عش عائلاً فالدهر أَنشد قائلاً

عش عائلاً فالدهر أَنشد قائلاً

ذَهبَ الَّذينَ يُعاشُ في أَكنافِهِم

ذَهبَ الَّذينَ يُعاشُ في أَكنافِهِم

Live in poverty, for Time recited, saying:

Live self-sufficiently, for time recited saying:

Gone are those in whose shelter one could live.

Those whom one could live under their care have gone.
