وَأَلَّفand united البينُseparation بينbetween القَلبthe heart والحزنِand sorrow
He went far away, parting my eyes from slumber;
And separation joined my heart to sorrow.

O my two companions, may my sorrow never afflict you;
By God, your Lord, turn aside to my beloved.
وَعاتباهand reproach him, you two لعلَّperhaps العتبَreproach يعطفُهُwill soften him
وأَنشداand recite, you two منsome of نسيبيmy love poetry أَوor نسيبكماyour love poetry (you both)
And reproach him; perhaps reproach will soften him.
And recite some of my love poetry, or your own.
وكنّياand allude, you two عنto غَراميmy passion فيin نشيدكماyour song (you both)
فإنthen if صَباhe inclines to love فاِذكرانيthen mention me, you two لاmay ... not رُزئتكماI lose you both
And allude to my passion in your song;
If he inclines to love, mention me—may I never lose you both.
وعرِّضاand hint, you two بيat me وقولاand say, you two فيin حديثكماyour conversation (you both)
ماwhat بالُis the plight of عبدكyour servant بالهجرانthrough estrangement تُتلفُهُyou destroy him
And hint at me, and say in your conversation:
“What of your servant, whom you destroy through estrangement?
اِرحَمهhave mercy on him منon account of عبراتtears فيكbecause of you واكفةٍstreaming
ومهجةand a heart بغليلwith burning thirst الوَجدِof passion لاهفةanguished
Have mercy on him for tears that stream for you,
And a heart anguished by passion’s burning thirst,
شَوقاًin longing لأَيّامfor days أنسintimacy منكfrom you سالفةٍbygone
فإنthen if تبسَّمhe smiles قولاsay, you two فيin ملاطفَةgentleness
Yearning for bygone days of intimacy with you.”
If he smiles, say gently:
ماwhat ضرَّharm would it do لوif بوصالٍthrough union منكfrom you تسعفهُyou bring him relief
وَهُوَwhile he is الَّذيthe one who بكbecause of you طولَthroughout الدهرtime مكتئبُsorrowful
“What harm would it do to grant him relief through union with you,
When he is forever sorrowful because of you,
وَقَلبُهand his heart بسعيرin the blaze of الهجرestrangement يلتَهِبُburns
فإنthen if تعطَّفhe shows tenderness فهوthen that is القصدthe aim والأربُand the desire
And his heart burns in the blaze of estrangement?”
If he shows tenderness, that is the aim and desire;
وإِنand if بداappears لكماto you both منfrom وجههhis face غَضَبُanger
فغالِطاهُthen mislead him, you two وَقولاand say, you two لَيسَnot نعرفُهُwe know him
But if anger appears to you both upon his face,
Then mislead him and say, “We do not know him.”
