He remembered a soft-voiced fawn in the protected pasture,
He reminisced about a pasture where a lover once sang,
And love stirred him to rapture, so he sang.
And passion stirred in him, so he sang in rapture.

His heart yearned with longing for Najd,
But where is India from Najd—how far away!
But how far is India from Najd and where!

Gray doves sang among the branches of the thicket,
The leaves on the branches sang
And he answered them with his sigh and groaned.
And he answered their song with his sighs.

Passion made them pour out their song,
To him, he rang out with a deep-drawn sigh.
With the panting breath of the hilltops.

The glint of passion showed in his eyes
By a flash that gleamed at al-Ubayriq late at night.
As brightness flashes on polished swords.

They flow freely—not the clouds when they hang heavy.
When no clouds were pouring rain.

I was enamored of him, though charged with no duty;
I am enthralled with him though not by duty,
Yet his glance decreed my death and made it law.
So his glance necessitates my death and sharpens it.

His love showed in my heart but he hid it,
Yearning, it declared its love outright and spoke in hints.
Avowing passion, hints in his speech.

So through loving him my life became an art.
So that life, because of his love, became art.

He appeared a full moon, a crescent shining,
And radiated as a star and swayed as a bough.
A star rising, a waving branch.

Beauty bent his stature in delight,
The charm of his beauty bent his slender shape,
So the heart was enthralled by the handsome one as he bent.
And my heart swooned for that bending loveliness.

To wish, he would be the utmost of its wishes.
That would be the extent of all it desired.

So he stained a palm with my blood and hennaed it.
So my hand was dyed with my blood and softened.

I turn the course of fate with deliberation,
And I know that whoever is patient will prevail.
Knowing that slow perseverance succeeds.

With my reliance I ward off the blows of calamity,
By entrusting my affairs whenever calamity arises.
When disasters assail and misfortunes befall.

But wording that I adorn, and meaning,
At anything but words I make radiant and meanings.

I seek release from my bondage to a time
That has fettered my wrists with shackles.
In whose palsied hand I am held as a hostage.
And I hope for your aid against an enemy -

Whenever I turn to face him, resolute.
Who turns his shield against me whenever I face him.

Content with your glorious rank as my pillar.
Your standing, in which I hope, is support enough for me.
Through you I have ample towering hopes -

You will fulfill them if fate becomes miserly.
Which you will fulfill when time withholds!

For you, while my fate opposed me and withdrew.
For you; my time has hindered and weakened me.

And settle me in that home as a dweller.
And establish a dwelling for me in that abode.

And house me among the gardens of Eden.
And settle me in Eden among the gardens.
