Have you seen, between the two mountain passes, full-breasted maidens?

They unveiled their faces as moons and shone forth as stars.

They set the slender spears of their waists swaying,

And drew keen swords from their eyelids.

And they went forth bestowing gifts upon the eyes—

Beauty—and taking hearts captive as plunderers.

They did not depart, setting beneath the canopies of majesty,

Until they had displayed rare wonders of beauty.

Among them, each radiant-browed maiden seemed

A moon lighting the deep darkness of her tresses.

She sways proudly with the exuberance of youth and tender years,

So she turns a young man's temple-lock gray.

She surpassed her peers when she revealed

Beneath her necklaces, her upper chest along with her breasts.

Do not marvel at my shameless passion for her, when she has

    Displayed wonders of exquisite beauty.

Her eyes gaze, and her glance cleaves

My throbbing heart with its sharpened edge.

So beware of those glances, for they are

Keener of edge than slender, gleaming swords.

My eye's tears keep pouring down

In longing, while the arrow from her eye strikes true.

And my heart yearned for her, and found love

Sweet, not regarding it as unceasing torment.

And the watering places of her love increase my thirst,

And I have indeed come to passion's drinking places.

I have never sobered—and how, in passion, could one sober

Who has gone drinking the wine of love?

She was not content with my rapture at her beauty

Until I had forsaken loved ones and beloveds.

I draw near, but her coldness drives me away, fearful

Of her; yet ardent longing draws me close, eager.

O my friend, if you are not in accord with me,

Then spare me reproach—may I lose you as a friend!

I have my own way in what I see, and indeed I see

That people have their ways in what they love.

I swear by the sincerity of my love—and it is an oath

Before which every slanderer is found a liar—

Were I to spend my lifeblood for her,

And meet my death, I would still not have fulfilled my duty.
