كُلُّevery نجمٍstar سَيَعتَريهwill befall it أفولُsetting
كُلُّ نجمٍ سَيَعتَريه أفولُ
وَقُصارىand the ultimate end سفرjourney البَقاءof continued existence القفولُreturn
وَقُصارى سفر البَقاء القفولُ
Every star will meet its setting.
And the end of life's journey is return.
لاحقٌa follower إِثرin the wake of سابقٍa predecessor واللَياليand the nights
لاحقٌ إِثر سابقٍ واللَيالي
بالمَقاديرwith fate's decrees راحلاتٌdeparting نُزولُalighting
بالمَقادير راحلاتٌ نُزولُ
One follows in a predecessor's wake, and the nights
Depart and alight, bearing fate's decrees.
والأَمانيُّand hopes كالمَناياlike deaths وإِنand even if ناdisputes (first half of the split word)
والأَمانيُّ كالمَنايا وإِن نا
زَعdisputes (second half of the split word) غرٌّa naïve man فالاشتقاقُfor etymology دَليلُis proof
زَع غرٌّ فالاشتقاقُ دَليلُ
And hopes are like deaths, even if this is disputed
By a naïve man—for etymology is proof.
ياO مُصاباًcalamity قدhas indeed جَرَّعَmade drink القَلبَthe heart صاباًbitter sap
يا مُصاباً قد جَرَّعَ القَلبَ صاباً
كُلُّall صَبرٍpatience إِلّاexcept عليكَover you جَميلُseemly
كُلُّ صَبرٍ إِلّا عليكَ جَميلُ
O calamity that has made the heart drink bitter sap!
All patience is seemly, save patience at your loss.
