Come, you two, tell me again my tale of old,

the days when my mark of youthful dalliance was fair.

And soothe me, you two, with the breeze of the east,

if a sick man may seek healing from an ailing one.

How wondrous were my days at the foot of al-Liwa,

when I was love itself in the shades of bliss.

    فمدمعي غادٍ وحزني مُقيم

    She departed, and patience departed after her;

so my tears flow forth, while my sorrow remains.

And a young gazelle, inexperienced in the ways of love,

whose neck wore amulets not long ago,

frolics playfully in the bliss of youth,

while his lovers are in painful torment.

The eye grazes on him as in a garden,

but the heart, through his rejection, is in hell.

When he appears amid his hair, you take him for

the forenoon sun in the gloom of a pitch-black night.

I keep my pledge to him, and on many a night

I sweetened the drinking companion's cup with thoughts of him.

If only I—since none has visited me but

his phantom—were one of the People of al-Raqim.

And a reproacher reproached me for loving him,

in ignorance of lovers, though he himself is to blame.

He would have me betray him, yet

the bond of my pledge in love is not dishonorable.

May the reproacher's echo fall silent over my love for one

whom I have lodged in the very core of my soul.

I wonder: does he know—the one for whom

my sound heart has gone mad with love and surrendered—

that through him I have become a poet,

stringing every well-strung necklace of verse about him?

But I am not—even if I am thought to be—

a poet who wanders in every valley.

And a breath of wind blew to us late at night—

ah, how lovely the breath of that breeze!

It passed along the flanks of Hajir's hills,

and perfumed their surroundings with fragrance.

It tells me love's tale with a chain of transmission,

from Rama, from the white gazelle of that sandy tract.

By God, tell me, O breeze of the east:

how fares al-Liwa in my absence, and how al-Ghamim?

Have the dear folk of the protected grounds broken the pledge

since I left, or do they keep my pledge of old?
