    Between al-ʿUdhayb and Burqat Dāḥik

a radiant beauty smiles, revealing spaced, smiling teeth.

In her quarter are places where lovers fall,

some dead for her, others wasting away.

Her supple curves and dark glances assail

with a pliant, straightened spear and a gleaming, cleaving sword.

    ما هنَّ للعشّاق غير مهالِكِ

    Never take pleasure in the watering places of her love;

for lovers they are nothing but places of death.

She has ravaged men's minds, yet assailed them

with nothing but charms deadly to hearts.

Her eye slays you, yet lowers its gaze—so marvel

at a libertine mimicking an ascetic's chastity.

She deserted me; her paths of estrangement never widened

without my paths in passion narrowing.

And indeed, I spend the night sleepless on thorns,

while she lies drowsy on the bedding of couches.

Do not borrow fortitude to withstand her desertion,

if you share my claim to passionate love.

And leave the talk of those who turn away from love,

my friend, if you are not to forsake me.

And if a bidder invites you to sell yourself

one day for love of her, sell to him and bless the bargain.

Indeed, she who bewitched you the night she shone

    with a sun's radiance in pitch-black darkness,

chooses no intimate companion but a man

lovesick, who rends the veils of ascetic piety.

So cast off the robes of piety for her, and find relief

from the lies of a deceitful censurer of ardent love.

Or else, abandon your claim to love, and shun

the path of passion, for you are no traveler on it.

And when her face appears, seek refuge

from an unveiled face that sheds lovers' blood.

How many a lover died for love of her,

yearning for that face, and became the least regarded of the dead!

    هلّا اِتَّقيتِ اللَه يا اِبنةَ مالِكِ

    You have possessed the souls of lovers, all of them;

will you not fear God, O daughter of Mālik?

    إِن تَطلبي قَتلي ظِفرتِ بذلكِ

    Enough for me are infatuation and anguish in loving you;

if you seek my death, you have attained it.
