Are you forgetful, Afif al-Din, or do you remember

Pledges watered by the early, returning rains?

And one like you forgets no pledge; it is only

Time—no champion against Time can be found.

    ولكن قضاءٌ أَوجَبَتهُ المقادرُ

    Nor are you one with whom affection is slighted;

But this is a decree imposed by the fates.

I seek a fair excuse for you, vindicating

Your faithfulness, though excuses have all but run out.

I would spare you this: that I tend your love at evening,

While in the morning my love lies ruined in your keeping.

A root pure in honor forbids you this,

As does a branch distinguished in chivalry's many forms.

And if the days make you forget my pledge, I—

By your worth—surely remember the old pledge.

To you, O brother of battle, a sufferer's outpouring,

Who deemed you worthy of it—will you then be grateful?

And endure, live on, and stay safe as long as lightning flashes,

And a breeze blows and rain clouds pour.
