وَأَعينٌand eyes أَمor مواضٍkeen blades مشرفيّاتُMashrafi
Are these supple forms, or Samhari spears?
And are these eyes, or keen Mashrafi blades?
سَلask عَنabout دَميmy blood عندماwhen تَلقاكshe meets you مُسفرةunveiled
تُخبِركَwill tell you عنهabout it الخدودَthe cheeks العَندِميّاتُcrimson
Ask about my blood when she meets you unveiled;
the crimson cheeks will tell you of it.
ياah! قاتلَmay ... slay اللَهGod ألحاظاًglances سفكنَthey shed دَميmy blood
هَلdid ...? كانَthere exist عِنديowed by me لَهاto them فيin الحُبِّlove ثاراتُblood-debts
Ah, may God slay the glances that shed my blood!
Did I owe them any blood-debt in love?
ماwould not بَلبلَtrouble القَلبَthe heart منwith وَجدٍardent longing ومنand with وَلَهٍbewilderment
هوايَmy passion لَولاwere it not for العيونُthe eyes البابليّاتُBabylonian
My heart would not be troubled with longing and bewilderment
by my passion, were it not for those Babylonian eyes.
وَماnor أُبرّئُdo I absolve نَفسيmy soul إِنَّهاindeed, it حَكمَتruled
بالحبِّin love's favor فاِحتكَمَتso ... held sway فيهاover it الصَباباتُardent longings
Nor do I absolve my soul, for it ruled
in love's favor, so ardent longings held sway over it.
وَلَيسَnor is it بِدعاًunprecedented فكمfor how many بالعِشقby love قدindeed بليتhave been afflicted
قَبليbefore me نفوسٌsouls عنfrom البَلوىaffliction أَبيّاتُproudly aloof
Nor is this new: how many have been tried by love—
souls before me that would not bow to affliction!
ياO عاذِليmy reproacher فيfor الهوىlove أَسرَفتَyou went too far فيin عَذليreproaching me
وكانَand ... would have يَكفيكَsufficed you لوif تُجديcould help إِشاراتُhints
O you who reproach me for love, you have blamed me too much;
hints would have sufficed you, if they could help.
كَيفَhow السلوُّforgetting love وأَشواقيand my longings مضاعفةٌredoubled
وَبينand between حُبّيmy love وَسُلوانيand my forgetting مُنافاةُincompatibility
How could I forget, when my longings are redoubled,
and my love and forgetfulness are irreconcilable?
هَيهاتَimpossible! قَلبيmy heart عَصانيdefied me فيin محبَّتهمloving them
لَمّاwhen غَداit came to be وَلَهُand it had فيin الحُبِّlove طاعاتُacts of obedience
Impossible! My heart defied me in loving them,
when it came to render obedience in love.
وَماand not ربوعُthe abodes of الهوىlove يَوماًever بدراسَةٍin ruins
وَقَدand indeed وَفَتkept faith ليwith me الحسانُthe beauties العامريّاتُof Amir
Nor are love's abodes ever laid waste,
for the beauties of Amir have kept faith with me.
ليI have منfrom سُعادَSu'ad سَعاداتٌjoys أَفوزُI win بهاthem
يومon the day of اللِقاءmeeting ومنand from لُبنىLubna لُباناتُcherished desires
I have joys from Su'ad, which I attain
on the day of meeting, and from Lubna, cherished desires.
وَفيand in غَراميَmy passion سرٌّa secret لاnot أَبوحُI speak openly بهof it
وَللمحبّينَand lovers have أَسرارٌsecrets خَفيّاتُhidden
And in my passion is a secret I do not divulge;
and lovers have hidden secrets.
لاnot أنكرنَّI shall surely deny الهوىlove مِنfrom بعدماafter تُليَتwere recited
عليَّto me منfrom سوَرchapters الأَحبابthe beloved ones آياتُverses
Never shall I deny love, now that there have been recited
to me verses from the chapters of the beloved.
فخذso take صَحيحَthe sound tradition of الهوىlove عَنّيfrom me ومُسنَدَهُand its chain-supported report
فَكَمhow many بإِسنادِهthrough its chain of transmission عنّيon my authority رِواياتُnarrations
So take love's sound tradition from me, and its chain-supported report:
how many narrations, through its chain, come down from me!
ومنand who يُناظِرُنيdisputes with me فيهabout it وقدwhen already نُشِرَتhave been unfurled
عَلىabove مَفارقِthe crowns of لَهويmy revelry منهof it راياتُbanners
And who can dispute with me about it, when there have been unfurled
above the crowns of my revelry banners of it?
واِستفرَغَتهُand drained it صَباباتيmy ardent longings فماso nothing بقيَتremained
بَعديafter me لأَهلfor the people of الهوىlove إلّاexcept صباباتُdregs
And my ardent longings have drained it dry, so nothing remains
after me for lovers but dregs.
