وَلِلدَهرand time has تَصعيدٌa raising عليناupon us وتَصويبُand a lowering
Are hopes belied each and every day,
In each day there is denial of hopes,
and does time keep raising us and casting us down?
And time takes us up and casts us down.
إِلامَhow long اِنقياديmy submission للزَمانto time تَروعُنيfrighten me

How long must I submit to time, frightened
Why do I submit to the tyranny of Time?
every day by its disquieting ways?
Each day it has practices to perturb me.
أَفيIs it in الحَقِّtruth أَنthat أَصدىI thirst وفيwhile in القَلبthe heart غُلَّةٌburning thirst

Is it right that I thirst, with burning thirst in my heart,
Is it right that I echo truth when in my heart there is still callousness,
for which a raging flame blazes between my ribs,
For which a fire burns in my breast?
وَيُصبحand becomes مَنone who دونيbeneath me نَقيعاًquenched أوامُهُhis thirst

while one beneath me has his thirst quenched,
And he, compared to me, is downcast, his water sweet,
sweet spring water flowing easily for him in a gushing stream?
While bitter to me are the water’s richest springs.

أَمانيُّthe wishes نَفسٍof a soul كلُّهنَّall of them أَكاذيبُfalsehoods
I go at evening and dawn, pressed to fulfill them—
I go and come back, led on by the quest of my soul’s fancies—
my soul's wishes, every one a false promise.
All of them are lies.

ولكنَّbut عجزاًhelplessness اِنتظارٌwaiting وَتأنيبُand reproach
I reproached my time, but time will not make amends;
I complained of my Time, but Time is not to be blamed,
yet waiting and reproach are only helplessness.
Rather it is helplessness, awaiting, self-reproach.
وَقَدand indeed ساءَنيgrieved me بينbetween المَهانةhumiliation والعُلىand glory
مقاميmy remaining علىin حالa state لهاbecause of it الجأشُthe heart مرعوبُterrified
It has grieved me, between humiliation and glory,
My station between abasement and heights has vexed me,
to remain in a state that leaves the heart terrified.
I stand in a state that terrifies the timid.

Then either glory whose utmost height can never be reached,
As for heights, Time cannot reach their summit,
or obscurity—for that, in truth, is desirable.
Or inertness, which is truly reprehensible.

I was fashioned with a nature such that, were I to force another,
I was created for that which, had I striven for other,
I would be defeated; it is said that affectation is defeated.
I would have been overcome; they say straining is defeated.

Shall time's vicissitudes hold me back in abasement,
Can the caprice of Time stop me importuning
when my stride is not confined, nor my fetter drawn tight?
When my steps are not confined nor my hands bound?

Then may my hand never raise my Indian-forged sword to me,
Then my hands would not sleep empty, and the loves
nor may the prized, swift steeds carry me onward,
Would not favor me, nor the companions draw me to themselves.

nor any lean, fleet steed, unmatched in the race,
All noble horses gone before were racers,
with its gallop and canter across desert wastes.
With competitors to spur them on.

Why, when my paths have not been barred to me,
What beaming light smiles whose branches below it
and neither an undertaking's allure nor its menace has hindered me?
Are intoxicated!

If calamities bring me down, I am raised again
What excuse is there for one who hopes for peace from Fate
to win glory by resolve, prudence, and experience.
When the twists of events have enabled the wiliest to grab it!
وإِنand if أَناI جُبتُcrossed البيدَthe deserts فيin طَلَبِpursuit of العُلىglory

And if I cross the deserts in pursuit of glory,
The time has come for my glory to be freely drunk
how many noble men crossed them before me, unblamed!
And for all desired things to succeed and sorrows to dissolve.

And no fragrant plant whose blossoms smile,
It does not befit my like to be seen infatuated
with the crest of the two Simak stars drawn down beneath its bloom—
And I am not one moved to joy by musicians.

And what excuse has one who hopes for peace from time,
I refused, so that no intruder comes to my dwellings,
when keen, cutting swords are within his reach?
As if I am a miser denied gifts.

The time has come for my wellspring of honor to run clear,
I want my glory, gallantry, aloofness,
so a hope may come true and a troubled soul find relief.
The resolve of a soul brought forth by clear minds.

I disdain that one like me should be seen distraught,
I know my people well, I am no fool,
and I am not one whom merry melodies beguile.
That to attain honors I must court them.

I pass the night, and no caller visits my threshold,
This is my wish; no doubts make it fail,
as though I were a miser whose bounty is kept out of reach.
Nor is glory miserable or opinion deceitful.

My glory, chivalry, and wisdom forbid this for me,
It has the highest, noblest rank,
as does the resolve of a soul brought forth by noble forebears.
And, from Hashim, a path smoothed to glory.

My people know—and there is no dullness in me—
Was it not a bright full moon that branched out
that I am indeed sought out for noble accomplishments.
And I became one branch nurtured by its moons?

And here is my father: no expectation of him is disappointed,
What shining light smiles whose branches below it
nor is his glory ill-starred, nor his judgment belied.

His is the highest rank in the very heart of nobility,
The zephyr sings to it when it breathes
and from Hashim, a well-trodden road to glory.
And the sun pours out its light and veil upon it.

Is he not a great tree that has spread its branches,
Its meadows rival musk pods in fragrance
so that I became its bough, grown tall through its joints?
And the ripe fruits in the sweet scent they exude.

And no fragrant plant whose blossoms smile,
With the most fragrant blossom in its nature
and on which a shower pours from the rainclouds' eyes,
When its generosities pour forth blessings.

for which the east wind is veiled whenever it breathes,
High-minded, when resolved to punish enemies,
and which the sun silvers and gilds,
Drawing the white sword swiftly from its sheath.

as does the burning scent of moist aloeswood,
And from his hands' bounty the water of life is poured.

is sweeter in scent than the perfume casket of his character,
Above his brow shines the illuminating full moon
when the perfume of his virtues is released from it.
Inscribed with light from the divine.

A resolute nobleman who, when he wills, is keener against his foes
He lodges the guest with utmost honor;
in edge than a cutting sword, gleaming white and keenly honed.
When they come to his plains he makes them family and bids them welcome.

A glance of his might shows you sudden death,
A gallant whose hands weighed heavy on the swords,
and rainwater pours from the bounty of his hands.
Bending them as they did under their burdens.

He is the radiant, bright-browed one; above his forehead
He established the pillars of the kingdom after their decay,
a radiance of divine light is inscribed.
Spending the night in counsel, honored and glorified.

Attentive to honoring the guest: when one seeks shelter
He attained the highest glories and sublime heights,
in his courts, welcome and warm greeting give him refuge.
Beyond the reach of description however hard description tries.

A youth whose generous favors weigh heavy upon necks,
Your complaining has allowed me to bare my soul.
till they groan like aged she-camels under their loads.
Are you uncertain or is my gaze piercing?

He set the pillar of kingship upright after it had leaned,
I seek refuge from being left with longing in my soul
so now, in his keeping, it is raised and secured with guy ropes.
And, without attaining my hopes, anguish and torture.

O peer and lord of lofty honors and lofty spears,
Do you see me assailed without my might striking terror
whose eminence no description or title can encompass,
Into any foe or any loved one hoping for my favors?

I complained to you of a plight that has brought me anguish:
Never let it be that your cub be seen
will you relieve my grievance, or is ruin my lot?
With time’s claws sunk into him!

May you be spared my ending the day with a need still in my soul,
I promised myself your granting my wish would be
and worry and torment standing between me and what I hope for.
The greatest gift, and if I failed my promise I would be disgraced.

I see myself a cast-off, my might never feared
So here I am, directing my request to you,
by a foe, nor my bounty hoped for by a loved one.
Most hopeful that my want will be obtained.

and if I fail to keep my promise, I am surely ʿUrqub.

So here I am, directing my petition toward you,
and my strongest belief is that my request will succeed.
