يغنّيsings كَماjust as غنَّتsang عليهupon it الحَمائمُthe doves
And a lute through which the bough of joy grows green
sings as the doves sang upon it.
إذاwhen حرَّكتstirs أَوتارَهits strings كفُّthe hand of غادةٍa maiden
فسيّانthen both are alike منof شوقlonging خليٌّfree وَهائمُand lovesick
When a maiden’s hand stirs its strings,
then those free of longing and the lovesick are alike.
يرنِّحُmakes sway منwhoever يُصغيlistens إليهto it صَبابةًwith passionate longing
كَماjust as رنَّحتهswayed it فيin الرِياضthe gardens النَسائمُthe breezes
It sets whoever listens to it swaying with longing,
as the breezes swayed it in the gardens.
