يَقولsays الهاشميُّal-Hashimi غداةَon the morning جُزناwe crossed
يَقول الهاشميُّ غداةَ جُزنا
بحارَseas الهِندِIndia نقطعُwe traverse كُلَّevery وَهدِhollow
بحارَ الهِندِ نقطعُ كُلَّ وَهدِ
Al-Hashimi says, on the morning we crossed
The next day Hashimi said in sorrow:
the seas of India, traversing every hollow:
We will cross the oceans of India,
أَتذكرdo you recall عنout of هَوىlonging تَلَعاتِuplands نَجدٍNajd
أَتذكر عن هَوى تَلَعاتِ نَجدٍ
وأَينَand where الهِندُIndia منfrom تَلَعاتِuplands نَجدِNajd
وأَينَ الهِندُ من تَلَعاتِ نَجدِ
“Do you recall, out of longing, the uplands of Najd?
Do you remember the desires of Najd,
And how far India is from the uplands of Najd!”
And where is India compared to the desires of Najd.
