My longing for the sanctuary stirred,

And love for the bashful, doll-like maidens,

And my remembrance of what has passed

Of bliss that came to an end:

The sweetness of life—I have lost its

    Meaning, save in imagination.

So my heart fluttered with lovesick anguish,

    And my eye wept blood.

Ah, for the redness of the

    Cheeks, and for the dusky hue of the lips;

And a figure you would take

    For a straightened Samhari spear,

    في حياتي مُنَعَّما

    Tender—through him I have always

    Lived my life in bliss;

    And cheek-down, as though

A speckled snake had been stretched upon the cheek.

    O you afflicted by him,

    Live sorrowful, enslaved by love.

And he who came to chide me

About him has now fallen in love.

Tell him: leave his snake-bitten victim be,

    And escape from him unharmed.
