وسدلن من تلك الشعور غياهبا
They brought stars forth from the firmament of their bosoms.
Stars emerged from the galaxies of their sleeves,
And let down depths of darkness from those tresses.
And shadows descended from those tresses.

And unveiled crescents from their halos.
Crescents rose from their halos,
They display marvels through their extravagant coquetry.
Displaying wonders too much for their coyness.

And emerged clothed from the dwellings' quarters.
They came forth from the abodes like consolers,
They sway in youth's mantle, full-breasted maidens.
Gliding gracefully in the cold of youth.

Then, when they grow familiar with you, they are tame gazelles.
When they glance towards you, be demure,
And when they shy away, you see them as herds of wild antelope.
And when they turn away, behold them turn away.

عجبا تريك عواسلا وقواضبا
Each woman of swaying figure, when she gazes,
Whenever a slender one sways,
Wondrously shows you quivering spears and keen swords.
You marvel at her as a fawn, slim and dainty.

It was not enough that she concealed the black snakes of her hair;
It wasn't enough that she veiled her black hair,
She even coiled scorpions above her cheeks.
She had to raise scorpions above her cheeks.

And a slender youth whose glances turn toward me,
And her glances that search my consciousness,
And so fletch an unerring arrow in my entrails.
Strike an arrow straight into my heart.

He shoots at my heart from the bows of his eyebrows,
They make my heart recoil from her stern brows -
And among marvels is what exceeds what is due.
Strange that they exceed what's proper!

For his sake I obeyed my infatuation and ardent longing,
In them my youth and adolescence obeyed,
And for his sake defied a slanderer and a watcher.
Yet my dignity and sternness disobeyed.

A fawn who counts sharpened blades as glancing eyes,
Take care, be wary of her glancing or singing,
And arrows as eyelashes, and bows as eyebrows.
Whether she is friendly or hostile.

So guard your heart if he smiles or gazes,
So guard your heart lest she smile or sing,
And beware of him, whether at peace or at war.
And beware her, peaceful or warring!
