Is it molten gold displaying the jewels of bubbles,
With pearl-like drops the clouds their bounty pour,
Or his smiling mouth’s saliva, mingled with cool sweetness?
Or does the morning dew now age and hoar?

A full moon makes the rounds with wine’s sun in an orbit;
The full moon circles round the sun of cheer
Pearl-like bubbles float upon it like shooting stars.
Floating like bubbles of pearl ashes here,

He brings it, and another wine from his lips,
Playing with her and others he regales
Unmixed, and blends his earnestness with play.
Mingling jest and earnest without scales,

سكري بريقته لا بابنة العنب
Do not think my drunkenness comes from his wine;
Think not my tipsiness from liquor came
My drunkenness is from his saliva, not the grape’s daughter.
’Twas her bright eyes that did my reason maim

قتل المحب يرى من ايسر الطلب
Of innate beauty, elusive when sought,
My love, a precious being, sought with zest
He counts slaying the lover among the easiest pursuits.
Lovers find the easiest quest a test

Without the lovesick heart crying out, 'I am despoiled!'
Unless the zealous youth’s heart it would plunge

My passion I declared and it was true
Realize that I set truth right with falsehood.
Though truth with falsehood I was wont to woo

A prophet of beauty, he revealed the sword as a miracle,
My love’s beauty in the days of yore
Since he came with wonders in his eyelids’ languor.
Was as a miracle men did adore

My heart suffers in passion from Abu Lahab.
That wildly burns my heart with Abu Lahab’s ire

And anger be his sole release
