O bān-tree bough, you brought forth from her face
A moon, and from those tresses, deepest darkness.
فيin ليلthe night of شعركyour hair ضلتlost their way الشعراthe poets وكمand how many
في ليل شعرك ضلت الشعرا وكم
زمرgroups ضحىthe morning radiance of ذاكthat الجبينbrow لهمfor them سباtook captive
زمر ضحى ذاك الجبين لهم سبا
In the night of your hair the poets lost their way; and how many
Groups that brow's morning radiance has taken captive for them!
لامblamed العذولthe reproacher علىfor هواكlove for you جهالةout of ignorance
لام العذول على هواك جهالة
حسداout of envy وحرفand distorted فيin المقالspeech واطنباand spoke at length
حسدا وحرف في المقال واطنبا
The reproacher blamed me for loving you in ignorance
And envy; he distorted his speech and spoke at length.
أيرومdoes he seek تقييديto bind me بمطلقwith unrestrained عذلهhis reproach
أيروم تقييدي بمطلق عذله
انيindeed I أرىsee جهلthe ignorance of العذولthe reproacher مركباcompound
اني أرى جهل العذول مركبا
Does he seek to bind me with his unrestrained reproach?
