  1. تلبست وجها من حديد لمطلهم

    وقلت به ألقاهم في المشاهد

    I donned a face of iron because of their stalling,

    And said, “With it I shall face them in public gatherings.”

  2. ولم أدر أن القوم من عظم بخلهم

    أعدوا لوجهي ألسنا من مبارد

    But I did not know that those people, in their immense miserliness,

    Had prepared tongues made of files for my face.
