Hark, O my messenger—carry greetings of peace

to my beloved folk in those tents.

And greet the little newcomer there among the tribe,

amid the gazelles’ lairs and the ostriches’ nest-scrapes.

And tell them: since you left, my eye

has poured forth freely, until sleep forsook it.

A stranger, whose home has drawn far away from you,

yearning, sorrowful, and madly enamored of you.

The journey to visit is long, and in his tears

he has indeed gone on swimming for a month and a year.

And every day, love strikes fear into

my heart, while its passion only grows.

My patience has left me, spent and gone,

and my eyelid’s stream of tears flows on.

Beyond the Hijaz, no dwelling has pleased me—

by the life of my love for you—in any land.

    Lands whose uplands and inhabitants

are dear to me—dear, dear, dear.
