    Disregard whoever reproached me and counseled me about him;

Indeed, my heart has not sobered from love of him.

The distant one, since he went away, has left me

A fount of tears that has not run dry since his departure.

He was generous with estrangement, yet

Granted me no union with him.

As for me, even if his desertion tormented me,

My heart would never turn from him in love.

    Beauty inscribed his cheek—

What a line, a gloss upon what it had expounded!

I do not forget him, as he was enamored of it,

Moving through the darkness and making the goblet gleam.

Time beheld him and hid its light,

And through him it suffered decline and faded.

Bewildered, I cannot tell: has a bough appeared,

Or a crescent bearing the midmorning sun?

How delightful to drink an evening draught from his hair,

And drink it in the morning from his mouth!

Wine pressed in a time of joy

    Dispels sorrow and preserves delight.

It gave off fragrance when its seal was broken,

And its scent wafted from the wine jar.

A slender youth with sweet, dusky lips beholds it,

Perfect in every quality, displaying his charms.

O my two friends, give me a drink of it at midmorning,

And live in plenty in life's shade, and be merry.

And when it is unveiled to me by its name,

Sing its praises [uncertain reading] among the cupbearers, and cry out.

And then learn its qualities from me,

And ask me, and make requests of me.

    I see no substitute for it in revelry;

No, nor has my heart sobered from intoxication.
