    And he also said:

I said to him, 'A kiss,' and he replied:

'Take it on my cheeks.' I began:

'Why do you burn me with fire,

when I have never disobeyed your command?'

He said to me, 'My side-locks have blossomed,

    their gardens on either side.

So quell the flames of my cheek,

and gather the fruits of both cheeks.'

    When he appeared at Ḥunayn,

and secretly intended to kill me as he passed,

I strung across the surface of the cheeks

the carnelian of my tears, and it scattered.

And when he saw me and smiled,

and unveiled the radiance of his face,

he reminded me of the days at al-ʿUdhayb,

    and their sweetness at al-Abraqayn,

and sowed brief moments of serenity,

    نظمي المذهب قد سما

    when he appeared at Ḥunayn.

    My gilded verse has soared;

in the horizon of its meaning, it shines clear.

And my rival's verse, this rust—

even were it gold, it would not take gilding.

    I have not risen by my own hand;

the lofty one—his heaven is on high [wording unclear].

Freeze, O rust that has already fallen,

and a star is above the two Farqads.

And the sea of my verse has grown vast,

while you amount to less than two jarfuls.
