وأمرد لم يطعني مذ كلفت به

حتى التحى جاءني طوعا على رغم

And a beardless youth had not obeyed me since I became enamored of him,

The stallion refused to obey me when I bid him

Until he grew a beard and came to me willingly, despite his reluctance.

Until spurred he came to me willingly though against his bent

ورد بعد جماح كنت أعهده

كما يرد جماح الخيل باللجم

كما يرد جماح الخيل باللجم

And he was reined in after the unruliness I had known,

And returned after defiance which I knew of him

Just as horses’ unruliness is reined in with bridles.

As the defiance of horses returns with the bridle
