يَضحَكُit laughs فَيin مَفرِقِthe hair’s parting الجَبِينِthe brow
يَضحَكُ فَي مَفرِقِ الجَبِينِ
Umayma wept because she saw my gray hair
Umayma wept when she saw my gray hair
Laughing at the parting above my brow.
Laughing on my temple
نَوَّرَhas blossomed غُصنُthe bough الشَّبَابِyouth مِنِّيin me
نَوَّرَ غُصنُ الشَّبَابِ مِنِّي
هَلare ...? يُنكَرُdeemed objectionable النَّورُblossoms فيon الغُصُونِthe boughs
هَل يُنكَرُ النَّورُ في الغُصُونِ
The bough of youth within me has blossomed;
The branch of youth has departed from me
Are blossoms on boughs to be faulted?
Can light be denied in the branches?
فَقُلتُso I said لاdo not تَحزَنِيgrieve أُمَيماUmayma
فَقُلتُ لا تَحزَنِي أُمَيما

وَنَشِّفي أَدمُعَ الجُفُونِ
So I said, "Do not grieve, Umayma,
So I said, don't be sad Umayma
And dry the tears from your eyelids."
And dry the tears of your eyes
