أَلَمَّتshe came to visit وماand no غيرُother than الوِشاحِthe sash وِشاحُa sash
وَلاَand no غَيرother than أطرافthe tips of الثُّدِيِّthe breasts رِماحُspears
She came to visit; no sash is a sash but hers.
Her veil revealed naught but the garment's hem
Nor any spears but the tips of her breasts.
Her breasts no more than spearheads under her cloak
وَلاand no غيرother than ماwhat فَوقَabove الرَّوادِفِthe hips بانَةٌa bān tree
وَلاَand no غيرُother than ماwhat فَوقَabove الجيوبthe neckline openings صباحُdawn
Nor any bān tree but what is above her hips.
Naught else but a rising moon was seen on her saddle
Nor any dawn but what is above her neckline.
Naught else but the morning shone over her gown
ولاand no وَردَroses إلاّexcept ماwhat حَوتheld وَجَناتُهاher cheeks
ولاand no غيرُother than منظومِthe ordered array in الثّغورthe mouths أَقاحُdaisies
Nor any roses but those her cheeks held.
No rose but what her gardens grew
Nor any daisies but the teeth arrayed in her mouth.
No sword but what her lips unsheathed
فَبِتناso we spent the night وماand what تحتَbeneath الوشاحِthe sash محرّمٌforbidden
علينَاto us وماand what فوقَabove الوشاحِthe sash مُباحpermitted
So we spent the night, with what lay beneath the sash forbidden
All under her veil forbidden unto us
to us, and what lay above the sash permitted.
All above her veil free unto us
