فحمٌ ذكت في حشاه نارُ

فحمٌ ذكت في حشاه نارُ

فقلتُ مسكٌ وجُلّنارُ

فقلتُ مسكٌ وجُلّنارُ

Charcoal, in whose heart a fire blazed;

Embers that ignited a flame within,

So I said: musk and pomegranate blossom,

I said “This is musk and ambergris!”

أو خَدُّ مَن قد هويتُ لَمّا

أو خَدُّ مَن قد هويتُ لَمّا

أطلّ من فَوقه العِذارُ

أطلّ من فَوقه العِذارُ

Or the cheek of the one I have loved, when

Or the cheek of my beloved when

The cheek-down peered out from above it.

The veil covering her face was lifted.
