You seek their favor, then do what is forbidden.

Love and disobedience? You have indeed remained heedless.

You styled yourself a servant, then harbored authority.

A servant, yet you command? I do not think you sober.

You have gathered the faults that merit rejection: pride and old age.

And what is one worth who adorns himself with vices?

Have your eyes not seen a guide to truth?

Have your ears not heard one calling to God?

After gray hair, do you seek youth anew?

And after guidance, seek blindness or feign it?

    ولاحَ صَباحُ الحقِّ لو أنَّ رائيا

    The herald of right guidance has indeed cried out—if only there were a listener;

    and truth's dawn has appeared—if only there were one to see;

and bounty's secret has shone—if only one endowed with reason

would behold a light or answer a caller.

    فلو كنتَ ذا عَيْنين كنتَ المُناجيا

    The worlds have risen before you, unveiled as brides;

had you two eyes, you would be in intimate communion.

And they cried, "Is there no equal to match us?" Yet I see

no equal for them in you, should you seek their hand as a match.

Otherwise, why does the oxeye stare wide-eyed,

while shadows have lined its eye-corners with kohl?

And why is the myrtle's temple-lock a brilliant green,

and the rose's cheek a deep crimson?

And why are the flowers' mouths found smiling

when the eyes of rain keep weeping?

And why has lightning embroidered the clouds, while

their downpours gird the pebbly plain with white, keen blades?

And why are the shining pearls set in their ordered strand,

so the horizon's breasts are adorned with them?

And why have earth's plains been wondrously patterned,

so lovely in their features, so delicate at their borders?

And why do the doves of the thicket sing melodiously,

and the boughs' slender forms sway, reaching toward each other?

And why does the water lily close its hand in fear,

and the iris extend its right hand in hope?

Do you think all these were created in vain,

without a lesson? No, by your Lord, they were not!

And that their sole end is amusement and pleasure?

Your judgment has indeed missed its mark.

No Arab orator is more eloquent in admonition

than a bird singing, if you understood its meanings.

Nor are Indian blades more forceful in rebuke

than lightning flashing, if you knew its warnings.

Nor is gracious kindness more sweetly received

than flowers breathing fragrance, if you recognized the favors.

O you absent from the holy presence, held back

by your nature from following guidance or complying.

Do you not fear punishment? Do you not hope for bounty?

Will no admonition make you desist? You have indeed kept scoffing.

Whenever calamity calls you to take heed of it,

hidden grace overtakes you, bringing rescue.

Yet hardship infects you only with obstinacy,

and respite brings you only persistence in error.

    وفيكَ أماراتٌ فلا تَكُ ساهيا

    Signs are addressed to you, and words speak of you;

and within you are tokens, so do not be heedless.

And many a woman asked, "Why this weeping eye of yours?"

though she had never known me forgetful of love.

Away with you! My mind has no room to spare

to listen to you, much less to recount my passion.

    فَرُبَّتَما أعْدى أسايَ الأواسِيا

    Leave me to another, and go seek repose;

for often my sorrow has infected my consolers.

    فما ليَ لا أبكي لِذلكَ مالِيا

    I was beguiled by a world that contended with me for my reins;

why should I not weep for that? What ails me?

The anguish of a bereaved mother of an only child, struck

by the agony of his death, leaving him laid low,

who turns over a thought she cannot escape,

and turns her gaze again, seeing nothing of him left,

then seeks noble patience's help against her plight,

but meets only a deserter and a herald of death,

and rends patience's veil from anguish so fierce

it turns dawn's whiteness black and still—

distraught and grief-mad, as sorrow trades with her

varied strains of lament, singly and redoubled—

is no greater than my anguish at my grievous lapse,

nor greater than my sorrow at the ugliness of my deeds.

    فياليتَ شِعري كيفَ بالشَّيبِ حالِيا

    Youth has passed, and I gained nothing worthwhile from it;

would that I knew how I fare with gray hair!

    ولكنَّ هَمِّي ما بَقِيْ مِنْ زَمانِيا

    I do not grieve that what has passed has passed away;

my concern is the time that remains to me.

For the All-Merciful has opened the gates of His pardon

to whoever returns to remembrance and approaches in awe.

I fear a shameful relapse, for excuses are scant,

though pardon's gate has a wider court.

My God, complaining to You is relief,

for You draw closer still to the one who complains.

My God, do not expose a fault You have concealed,

for I have no hope but You, my God.

I shall perish utterly unless I receive mercy from You

that drives my terrors away and brings my hopes near.

Perhaps He by whose bounty existence stands

will, through gracious kindness, restore my state to beauty.
