الدَّهْرُtime يَحْكُمُjudges بَيْنَناbetween us ياO ظالِمَهْunjust woman
هاbehold حَالَتيmy plight هَاتِيthis وأنْتِand you العالِمَهْthe one who knows
Time shall judge between us, O my oppressor.
Time will judge between us, O unjust one.
Here is my plight—present it, for you know it well.
Behold, this is my plight, and you know it.
الحاظُكِyour glances الدُّعْجُdeep-black الوَقاحُbrazen ظَلَمْنَنيthey wronged me
هَيْهاتَfar from it لاno لاno بَلْrather لِحاظِيmy glances الظالِمَهْthe wrongdoers
Your dark-eyed, brazen glances have wronged me.
Your dark, brazen glances have wronged me.
Far from it—no, no! Rather, my own glances are the guilty ones.
Far from it! No, no—rather, my glances are the wrongdoers.
طَرْفيmy gaze علىagainst قَلبيmy heart جَنَىcommitted a wrong لَوْif أنَّنيthat I
حارَبْتُI fought عَيْنِيْmy eye ماnot غَدَوْتُI became مُسَالِمَهْat peace with it
My gaze transgressed against my heart; had I but
My gaze has wronged my heart; had I
waged war against your eyes, I would never have made peace.
fought my eye, I would not have made peace with it.
أنْتِyou الأميرُthe ruler وأنْتِand you خَصميmy adversary فاحْكُميso judge
لِيin my favor أوor عَلَيَّagainst me فَلنْso will not أُسائِلَI question ذاthat لِمَهْwhy
You are the sovereign, and you are my adversary—so judge
You are the ruler, and you are my adversary; so judge
for me or against me; I shall never ask why.
in my favor or against me; I will not ask why that is.
مالِيْwhat have I? لِمَنْto whom أشكُوI complain سِواكِother than you ظُلامَتِيmy grievance
فَلْتَرْحَميso have mercy صَبّاًa lovesick man شَكاكِhe complained to you مَظالِمَهْhis grievances
Whom have I but you, to whom I may complain of the wrong done me?
What am I to do? To whom but you can I complain of my grievance?
Then have mercy on a lovesick lover who laid his wrongs before you.
So have mercy on a lovesick man who has complained to you of his grievances.
