لَمْ يُبْقِ عَقْلاً صَحِيحاً لا ولا صاحي
The embroidery of your cheeks with basil and wine
The embroidery of your cheeks with basil and breeze
has left no mind sound—no, nor sober.
Has left no sane mind, neither awake nor asleep

Myrtle down upon two cheeks that have united
The excuse of a willowy one over cheeks that gathered
the lustre of wine with refreshment for souls.
The grace of the breeze as solace for souls

Blessed be God, who fashioned it in due measure:
Blessed is Allah, their Creator, for the measure
two sprigs of basil upon two cups of wine.
Of two basil plants on two cups of breeze
أمَّاas for العِذارُthe cheek-down فَماthen how أوْفىfully does justice بِمَعذِرَتيto my excuse
أمَّا العِذارُ فَما أوْفى بِمَعذِرَتي
لوif كانَwere يلحَظُهُhe beholds it عَنْthrough لَحْظيَmy gaze اللَّاحيthe reproacher
لو كانَ يلحَظُهُ عَنْ لَحْظيَ اللَّاحي
As for the cheek-down, how fully it would bear out my excuse,
As for the excuse, it did not suffice my justification
if the reproacher could behold it through my eyes.
If the mischievous one were to glimpse my fervent gaze

Of my reward from God in heeding advisors
