Tears that kept pouring betrayed your secret,

and a rift that will not mend laid your patience low.

So what excuse have you before your censurer, when

things that cannot be concealed have stripped the veil from you?

Far from it! Within me burns a grief: were it to unleash one outburst

of itself upon the stars, the stars could not revolve beneath it.

    كلّا ولا كُلُّ سُكْرٍ جرَّهُ شَنَبُ

    Not every wound is dealt by a dark-eyed beauty's glance;

no, nor is all intoxication brought on by cool, sweet teeth.

    I alone drank love's well-aged cup,

and all the lovers drank what remained.

Whoever is a lover like me has the right

not to care whether the tribe stays or departs.

I am absorbed in the face of the one my heart adores,

to the exclusion of every other concern; so desire does not demean you.

A face: when all faces trace their lineage to

beauty, beauty traces its lineage to none but it.

Oh, how my soul longs for a friend with whom I may share

talk of Layla, who will listen to me as he ought,

pure of hearing, who turns no

face toward reproach and is not debased by falsehood and lies.

I would confide to him beauty's secret, whose hidden essence is too exalted

for pens and books to behold.

In it is a cure for incurable illness, save

that hearts are drawn to its whispered confidences.

So never suppose that, on listening to its melody,

a heart will ever be released by anguish, even at time's end.

A secret of beauty: if its radiance were unveiled before

a blind man, he would see what the veils have hidden.

    أو رامَهُ أخرسٌ دانتْ له الخُطَبُ

    Or, spoken into a deaf ear, it would make it hear;

or, if a mute sought it, oratory would be at his command.

Or, if it traced a mark upon a dead man's cheeks, it would revive him,

and he would rise at once, leaping in his garments.

So is there in this beauty anything to make one heed its describer,

or any wonder in what has appeared of its description?

Suppose alchemy proved true—where is one who would heed it?

Far beyond reach! Both the sought and the seeking have grown difficult.

Men are scarce: is there anyone to whom one can unburden oneself

with a breath before which the expanses tremble?

Look again and again into this existence, and you will find

of that secret what appears and what is veiled.

For through its subtleties the celestial spheres revolve,

    and the sun is unveiled, and the full moon wears a veil;

    والزَّهْرُ مُبْتَسِمٌ والقَطْرُ مُنتَحبُ

    and the garden wears a mantle, and the bough bends;

and the blossoms smile, and the rain sobs.

And turn your ear toward the trilling birds when

dawn breaks: that rapture springs from the secret.

    ولِلْحُليِّ ففيه الحَلْيُ يَصطخِبُ

    And to the waters: their murmured exchanges are about it;

and to the ornaments: about it the ornaments clamor.

And smell, if you wish, the breaths of the breeze when

the clouds have laden it with the garden's fragrance.

    لاشَكَّ أنَّ شَذاهُ منهُ مُكْتَسَبُ

    You will find upon it a richly fragrant aroma;

no doubt its perfume is derived from that secret.

In every beauty it has a meaning, beheld by

a heart from which falsehood has gone and doubts have been effaced.

The eye cannot hope to gain a glimpse

of its beauty while it still desires anything else.

Nothing has banished wine from that exalted presence

except that courtesy has failed it.

And a censurer who knew not the depth of my anguish

thinks I am among those whose striving is a trot.

Away from me with your blame: I have no time for it.

Not everyone who burns within is dejected.

I have two burning longings, while lovers have one:

a distinction mine alone—and love has ranks.

I am content to leave whoever keeps reproaching me as he is,

living out his span without a bond ever attaching to him.
