Say, gazelle, who traced two wāw letters

just above two cheeks, beyond compare?

Exalted indeed is He who fashioned,

    without any rival,

    في حُسْنِهِ الفردِ

    your most wondrous beauty,

    peerless in its loveliness;

and made the full moon rise

    from that stature,

perfectly proportioned, swaying in two cloaks,

like a supple branch yielding to the north wind.

Who will bring me him who sways

the heart of one endowed with reason,

    enslaved by beauty,

    enthralled by love?

O you who ask about me,

    behold, my condition speaks.

And how fares one who, because of parting, keeps

watching the two Simāk stars throughout the nights?

Glory to Him who fashioned him,

    a marvel without equal,

like a gazelle in proud bearing,

    and a branch in form.

O you who reproach me for him,

you have gone too far in reproach.

Leave off arguing: nothing brought me my doom

but two eyes that shoot arrows.

    I have melted with longing,

    and died of love.

    Passionate longing burns on,

    and tears pour down.

O people, is there a healer

to charm away my heart's burning anguish?

I have no defense against the glance of two eyelids,

which shoots two arrows and cares nothing.

    بزَوْرةٍ تُدنيهْ

    The rogue promised me

    a visit that would bring him near;

    then turned away, shying off,

    so I kept calling him.

    Then when he came, strutting,

I sang to him a reminder:

Crescent-faced one, tell me, O light of my eye:

will you delay my due like this? Enough delay!
