    Of a soft-voiced gazelle,

    a bewitcher of minds:

    her quivering hips—

a bān tree sways upon them.

O, who will help one love-struck

by a slender beauty from Eden,

like the moon at its full,

and like a gazelle in beauty?

    She has aroused lovesickness

    and kept my eyelid sleepless

    with a languishing eye,

    drowsy with coquetry,

    that scorns al-Hajjaj

and makes you forget his tyranny.

What has love to do with me?

It has indeed stirred my sorrows.

O mistress of the curtained chambers,

your turning away has wasted me.

I do not complain to you of my plight—

    and what is a love-distraught man's state?

    You know it well:

burning anguish that has kindled its fires,

    and weeping that has stirred

    the heart's own sorrows.

    O slender bough that sways,

and so turns me away from patience,

has the time not come for you to feel compassion

    for a chaste, love-distraught man?

Do not deny the tormented lover

the dusky hue of that mouth.

    Grant me even its breath.

Glory be to Him who adorned it,

    and worked ivory

and pearls into its pure gold.

Who will grant me my wishes,

    when sickness has wasted me?

It was my gaze that lured me,

    and love's decree is irrevocable.

I have no strength to face this,

    nor any resolve for it.

And how could I have resolve,

when my patience has been betrayed

    by a delicate, coquettish maiden,

    drunk with haughtiness?

What a wondrous garden of beauty,

    through whose midst she strolled!

    The boughs, in their swaying,

were like her gait within it.

    Then she began to sing,

    moved by its subtle charms:

“On the right, a lime tree,

    and ahead, a basil plant;

and the vine arbor, a weaver,

    has embraced the pomegranate tree.”
