O You who bring relief to humankind after they have despaired,

have mercy on servants who have stretched forth poverty's palms.

You have accustomed them to abundant sustenance without a cause,

save the beautiful hope with which they reached out toward You.

And You have bestowed grace anew, at their coming and going,

with generosity if they act justly, and forbearance if they act unjustly.

Virtues to which the proud have bound themselves,

and every unruly one is tethered by generosity's fetter.

O You who made Yourself known through kindness, and were thus acknowledged

for Your abundant favors by the outskirts and the center.

And O Knower of the hidden aspects of affairs: no

delusion can befall You—no, nor any error.

A poor servant, broken at generosity's door,

whose habit is to come when hard-pressed.

Whenever he comes to stretch out his palm, he is shamed

by foul deeds and sins that have exceeded all bounds.

O Boundless One, creation's stride falls short of the blessings

from You; when they speak to describe them, they stumble.

And O You who spread Your mercy with the hand of graciousness,

so no transgressor is overtaken by despair of You.

Have mercy on servants who have been content with a straitened life,

so wherever they land among humankind, they glean.

When this world is shared out, they have nothing

but the darkness for blankets and the earth for mats.

Yet, under the shelter of Your majesty, they hold a rank

sublime and lofty-peaked, with no rank above it.

And whoever is united with the one he loves

cares not whether the tribe stays or journeys far away.

    وكلُّ شَيءٍ يُرَجَّى بَعْدَ ذا شَطَطُ

    We are the slaves and You are the King—there is nothing else;

and anything hoped for beyond this is excess.
