يا فائقاً في عُلومِ الكَمِّ أجْمَعِها

يا فائقاً في عُلومِ الكَمِّ أجْمَعِها

مِنْ مُوسِقَى وارْتَماطيقي وأشكالِ

مِنْ مُوسِقَى وارْتَماطيقي وأشكالِ

O you who excel in all the sciences of quantity,

O one surpassing in all branches of mathematics

in music, arithmetic, and geometrical figures,

Of music, geometry, and figures

قلْ أيُّ شيءٍ يُساوي النصفُ منْهُ لِثُل

قلْ أيُّ شيءٍ يُساوي النصفُ منْهُ لِثُل

ثِ العشر من ثُمنه من غير إشكالِ

ثِ العشر من ثُمنه من غير إشكالِ

say: what thing has half of it equal to one-

Tell me what thing equals half of it for a third

third of the tenth of its eighth, without ambiguity?

Of an eighth of it without complications

وهو إذا زِيدَ ثانيهِ وخامِسُهُ

وهو إذا زِيدَ ثانيهِ وخامِسُهُ

لِعَدِّ أوَّل شَطْرَيْهِ بإجمالِ

لِعَدِّ أوَّل شَطْرَيْهِ بإجمالِ

And when its second and fifth are added

And if its second and its fifth are added

to the total count of the first of its two halves,

To the count of its first two halves in total

أضْحى دَلِيلاً على شَكْلٍ مَقاطِعُهُ

أضْحى دَلِيلاً على شَكْلٍ مَقاطِعُهُ

ضَرْبٌ من المُوسِقى مُسْتَظْرَفُ الحالِ

ضَرْبٌ من المُوسِقى مُسْتَظْرَفُ الحالِ

it comes to signify a figure whose segments

It becomes evidence of a shape whose sections

are a kind of music, charming in character.

Are a type of ingenious music

حَدَّاهُ من جِهَتَيْهِ نِصْفُ دائِرةٍ

حَدَّاهُ من جِهَتَيْهِ نِصْفُ دائِرةٍ

وخَطٌّ اكْتَنَفاهُ دُونَ إهمالِ

وخَطٌّ اكْتَنَفاهُ دُونَ إهمالِ

Its two boundaries, on either side, are a semicircle

Bounded on both sides by a semicircle

and a line, which together enclose it without omission.

And a line enclosing it without neglect
