O night that light had clothed in a robe,

in which I trailed the hems of fellowship's mantle,

when my youthful frame was supple in its sway: if

an east wind blew, it stirred; or if youth swayed, it swayed.

And when the gardens of wishes displayed their splendors,

clad in a fine robe of their flowers' adornments,

where I ran freely alongside pleasures,

and swayed proudly in the robes of revelry.

O night that no eye of impurity had beheld,

it utterly baffled the vicissitudes of time.

    تَخالُها في مُحيَّا دَهرِها خَالا

    Its essence was freed of the motes of impurity;

you would deem it a beauty mark on the face of its age.

Beauties delighted as our dispositions grew gentle,

and a state grows fair when it accords with another state.

A night that lent its blackness to the hair of graceful women,

and buttoned on a robe of the radiance of cheeks.

All night, the glances of hopes gazed at us within it,

in safety, while time's watchman dozed off, heedless.

We spent the night in fellowship's bliss, which embraced us,

in company that trailed the hems of beauty,

among youths of sweet character, adorned with grace,

possessed of gentle manners, delightful in disposition.

We passed round cups of unalloyed affection,

where we gathered the fruit of night-time talk as tidbits.

And the cupbearer of strong wine spent the night at our pleasure's bidding,

passing wine round with his palms, its milk flowing freely.

He had drawn a spear's keen blade from his choice wine,

with which he charged against the Abyssinian night.

Yellow wine, delicate and lovely in substance and radiance,

whose moods refinement had tamed over years.

Whenever we tore its veil with the hand of mixing,

it let down bridal canopies for us against unalloyed grief.

With it, we spent the night at ease amid the gardens of fellowship,

plucking hopes from it—the fruit-clusters of wishes.

Until the crescent, traveling by night, turned its back on the east,

away from it, and answered the west's call with acclamation.

    عَنَتْ لَهُ سُرْبَةُ الظَّلماءِ إجْلالا

    And dawn advanced as a king amid the east wind's army;

the troop of darkness bowed to him in reverence.

As though night were a Zanj man, now sated with drink,

in redness from dawn's glow, then strutting proudly.

As though the horizon were a cup of darkness that had frozen,

where dawn's radiance melted into wine's crimson hue.

How lovely a night, grown drunk with fellowship!

For love of it, the days turned yellow in the late afternoons.
