    O distant ones who yet dwell within the heart,

    And departing ones who have neither journeyed nor gone away.

    فَكيفَ لِيْ مِنكُمُ صَدٌّ وهِجرانُ

    Your very selves have dwelt amid the curves of the ribs;

    How, then, can I suffer your rejection and abandonment?

    I marveled that a soul and its eye should long for you,

    Though within them you are the spirit and the eye’s pupil.

    You are I, and I am you—one and the same.

    Were we to part, forgetfulness would slay love.

    Do not demand evidence of my passionate love from me,

    For no proof is adduced for what the senses perceive.
