I yearn for Najd whenever Najd is mentioned,

and longing revisits my heart at its remembrance.

My body sickens when its breeze blows,

gentle, long familiar with the tamarisks—the tamarisks of the preserve.

Najd is not my aim, nor remembrance of its past,

but I am drawn by the one for whom Najd has become home.

    وللبَيْنِ سَهْمٌ لَيْسَ يُخطي لَهُ قَصْدُ

    Separation aimed straight at me and mortally struck my vital parts;

and parting has an arrow whose aim never misses.

Ah, is there, back to the days that passed in the preserve,

a path for a yearning soul whose suffering has reached its limit?

When fate was favorable and time lent its aid,

the lovesick lover was not spurned, nor was the door shut.

May God water the edges of the preserve with every falling drop

of tears that waters them when thunder breaks its promise,

and greet the faces of the tribe beside the ghada trees

with every rain that brings fertility and does not pass them by.

O beloveds of my heart—and humiliation is love's brother—

what I conceal is indeed greater than what appears.

Take my hand; I can no longer bear your rejection.

Otherwise, deliver the finishing blow, and afterward turn away.

If you do not pity the humiliation of my stance,

then tell me whom I should approach and look to for hope hereafter.

    عَلى كلِّ حالٍ ليسَ لي عَنْكُمُ بُدُّ

    Grant me union or turn away—you are my safety and my hopes;

whatever happens, I cannot do without you.

I say, as my tears flow morning and evening,

to two friends whom rejection has driven away along with me:

By your lives, if you reach the sandy tract of the preserve,

stop and weep for one with no hope of sound judgment.

Then, if you are asked who it is you mourn,

say: a yearning man whom fortune betrayed in love.

My two friends, lovers are of many kinds in love,

but in my anguish I am a landmark without peer.

I adjure you both by God: tell me truly—has what

you have seen of my state in love any equal?

Fate has sworn against me to undo my firm resolves,

so now I have no power either to loosen or to bind.

O woman who reproaches me, if you blame me for love,

then my heart has no power to accept or reject it.

May God revive my joy through their nearness,

for distance has taken from me more than it wished.

So my heart may awaken, there within my ribs,

with the world having yielded and good fortune having lent its aid.
