    He thought I had recovered from my longings,

    When he saw that I did not complain to him of what I endured.

    So he sought to learn what lay hidden in my breast,

    And behold, I was sighing and in death's throes.

    With what can he complain—or how, tell me, can he complain—

    A dying man whose soul has risen to his collarbones?

    Ah, for this separation and this estrangement—ah!

    May God heal my brokenness through reunion.

    إنَّنِي والهَوى عَلى العَهْدِ باقِ

    Be as you wish, O darling of my heart;

    Indeed, by love, I remain faithful to the pledge.
