    Gentle east-wind breezes blow from Najd's uplands,

    and waft fragrance, redolent of incense.

    And that is only because they wander through

    our familiar haunts, among the little tamarisks and laurels.

    There the soil's fragrance surpasses musk,

    and its spreading trees put rosy ambergris to shame.

    بها قَدْ مَضى حُكْمُ العَفافِ على الودِّ

    Haunts we love, which long to meet us;

    there chastity's rule once held sway over love,

    at a time when no talebearer voiced suspicion,

    nor a reproacher assailed us, nor a spiteful foe abetted our enemies.

    فحالَتْ ومازِلْنا كِراماً عَلى العَهْدِ

    We made solemn covenants there with the days;

    they changed, but we nobly remained true to the pledge.

    فَنُعماهُ للبَلوى ولُقْياهُ لِلصَّدِّ

    Such is time's way: its covenants are broken;

    its blessings lead to affliction, its meetings to rejection.

    Ah, if only I knew—wishes are love's utmost reach—

    shall I see Najd, or alight on Najd's uplands?

    And shall I quench a burning thirst with a dark-lipped maiden's water,

    in a liver of which nothing remains but longing?

    And shall I alight in her encampment—may rain drench it—

    in dwellings whose standing is exalted in my eyes?

    Where white pavilions, brown spears, and sword-blades

    are a sky and lights beheld from afar.

    When the devils of wishes circle round them,

    the missiles of al-Khatt pelt them from lean, sleek steeds.

    And if fancy's light footstep strays beyond its bounds,

    there the arrows of glances strike dead at close range.

    And in the white pavilion is a fair one: were she to appear

    one day before the morning sun, it would stray bewildered from its course.

    She rises, revealing a radiant dawn of a face,

    and sets, revealing a jet-black night of hair.

    She tells the youths of dalliance: “Keep your distance!

    For we, gazelles of the secluded chamber, strike at lions.

    When battle seethes, we unsheathe our eyes

    as keen swords, our figures like supple spears.”

    Love's wars have laid low every combatant,

    and given the desert's white gazelle victory over the tawny lion.

    Her budding breasts thrust more keenly than lances,

    and her glances wound more grievously than Indian swords.

    What are sword-blows beside the glance of an eye?

    And what are spear-thrusts beside an erect breast?

    وليسَ لِمَطْعونِ النُّهودِ سِوى اللَّحدِ

    One wounded by lances is treated, and his wounds heal;

    but for one pierced by breasts there is only the grave.

    And a woman with henna-dyed palms, adored by jewels,

    appeared like the full moon on an auspicious night.

    فيا غَيَّهم فيما أتَوْهُ ويا رُشدي

    My reproachers forbade me her, but I disobeyed them;

    how astray they went in what they did, and how sound my judgment!

    Passion for anyone but her is forbidden to my heart,

    however fierce the longing I endure for her.

    I gazed on beauty upon her cheek, and never

    found, in all creation, a way for my heart to do without it.
