    Ah, does he who spent the night untroubled by sleeplessness know

    That, since he went away, my eyelids have not met,

    And that my passion, since he left, remains with me,

    And that my patience, since he departed, has divorced me?

    And nothing drove my longings and stirred my anguish

    But the driver of the caravans on the day of parting.

    فيا لَيْتَني مَيْتٌ ولَمْ أتعشَّقِ

    I fell in love among strangers, and then they bade farewell;

    So, ah, would that I were dead and had never fallen in love!

    And would that my eye, when it saw them, had become attached

    To others, even to the gleaming lightning!
