A full moon shone forth on my heart's horizon.

In beauty he is beyond description—sublime indeed.

He forbade union and made rejection lawful,

And lodged manifold sorrows in my breast.

How, tell me, can love be forgotten

By one whose heart burns with longing?

Beauty of form and beauty of character—who would not

Choose him, even if he shuns him and tires of him?

O you who reproach me for his cruelty, be gentle!

Do not blame me; my excuse is clear. Stop—no more!

Every reproach you have fashioned about him has vanished

Before my heart, for it finds no resting place.
