علىfor أيwhich حالstate of affairs للياليto the nights أعاتبI reproach
على أي حال لليالي أعاتب
وأيand which صروفvicissitudes للزمانof time أغالبI struggle against
وأي صروف للزمان أغالب
For what state of affairs shall I reproach the nights?
In any case, I reproach the nights
And which vicissitudes of time shall I struggle against?
And what vicissitudes of time can I overcome?
كفىit is enough حزناas sorrow إنيindeed I علىdespite القربnearness نازحfar away

It is sorrow enough that, though near, I am far away,
Sorrow is enough, I migrate from the loved one
And that, despite my claim to be present, I am absent,
And I am absent from my witnesses

And that I submit to the rule of events:
And I descend on the judgment of events
At times they make peace with me, and at times they wage war.
Now greeting me, now fighting me

I have forgotten them, save for the remembrance of haunts
I distract them except the thoughts of promises
Whose wonders belong to nights long past.
It has in the bygone nights wonders

And indeed, the wind’s breeze from their direction stirs my longing
And the breeze from them excites me
For them, and the playful lightning flashes captivate me.
To them and the flirtatious lightnings allure me
