I marvel at man, whose worldly life makes him yearn

for life, while his inevitable end cuts him off.

He passes evening and morning blundering in blind confusion,

blind of insight, while hopes sow him.

He is beguiled by time, delighted with its company,

though he knows for certain that time will strike him down.

And he gathers wealth with a greed that never leaves him,

though he knows he gathers it for others.

You see him anxious about squandering his dirham,

yet unconcerned about the faith he squanders.

And the worst of people in planning for their ultimate end

is one who spends his life on what does him no good.
