وحسناand in beauty علىto شيخshaykh of الشيوخthe shaykhs الذيwho صفاis pure
A greeting as fresh as the blossoms of spring,
Greetings like spring flowers, fresh
and as beautiful, to the shaykh of shaykhs, who is pure.
And beauty upon the Shaykh of Shaykhs who is pure
ولوand had لمnot يعقنيhindered me العذرthe excuse عنfrom قصدseeking ربعهhis abode
سعيتI would have hastened كماjust as يسعىhastens الملبيthe pilgrim chanting the talbiyah إلىto الصفاal-Safa
And had no excuse kept me from seeking his abode,
And if old age had not prevented me from visiting his abode
I would have hastened as the pilgrim chanting the talbiyah hastens to al-Safa.
I would have hastened like one yearning for purity
ولكنbut عدانيkept me away عنهfrom him دهرan age مكدّرtroubled
ومنand who ذاthis one الذيwhom واتاهfavored him فيin دهرهhis lifetime الصفاserenity
But troubled times kept me away from him;
But a troubled age has kept me from him
and who is there whom serenity has favored in his lifetime?
And who in his age attained such purity?
