ومدركاتٍand things that overtake ولمand did not تلبhave understanding وليسَand there is no لهاfor them
ومدركاتٍ ولم تلب وليسَ لها
روحٌsoul وتنصفُand exact justice منfrom باغِan oppressor وإنand even if بَعُداhe is far away
روحٌ وتنصفُ من باغِ وإن بَعُدا
They overtake, yet never linger, and possess no
And things that overtake, though without understanding and possessing no
spirit; they exact justice from an aggressor, however far away.
soul, yet exact justice from an oppressor, however far away.
فيin كُلّevery واحِدةٍone صوتُa voice إِذاwhen لَهَجَتit speaks
في كُلّ واحِدةٍ صوتُ إِذا لَهَجَت
بهِwith it أصابتit achieves مُراداًan intended aim فيin الذيthe one who مَرَداrebelled
بهِ أصابت مُراداً في الذي مَرَدا
Each one has a voice; when it cries aloud,
In each is a voice: when it speaks
by that voice it strikes its mark in whoever has rebelled.
with it, it achieves its aim against the one who rebels.
كأنّas though أولادهاtheir offspring حنَّḥinn spirits إِذاwhen انبعثتthey spring forth
كأنّ أولادها حنَّ إِذا انبعثت
لمdid not تبقِleave لاneither والداَa father حيًاalive ولاnor وَلداa child
لم تبقِ لا والداَ حيًا ولا وَلدا
It is as though their offspring moan when they fly forth:
Their offspring seem like ḥinn spirits: when they spring forth,
they leave neither parent nor child alive.
they leave neither father nor child alive.
