يَعلوrises ويَهبطand falls فيalong شَباهُits cutting edges مَنهَلُa spring
Its watered pattern quivers; it is grooved, as though
The restless sea is choppy, as though
A spring were rising and falling along its cutting edges.
It rises and falls at wells’ deceptive slopes;
أوحىswifter وأوجزُand briefer منthan إعادةِrepeating نظرةٍa glance
فيat وجهِthe face of معشُوقٍa beloved يصدُّturns away ويبخَلُand withholds affection
Swifter and briefer than a second glance
Swifter than a beloved’s glance that feigns
At the face of a beloved who turns away and withholds affection.
Indifference, denies, leaves longing hopes.
ويُريكَand it shows you أنthat علىupon يَدِيthe two hands of مُستلِّهِthe one who draws it
نسجاًa fabric منof الآلthe mirage الذيthat يُتخيّلُis imagined
And it shows you that upon the hands of the one who draws it
My hands seem to touch imaginings,
Lies a fabric woven of illusory mirage.
The lyre that dreams and sadness interweaves;
لاnot يقدِرُis able الدّمthe blood أنto يُرىbe seen فيupon نصلهِits blade
فكانّماso it is as though لمnot ينفصِلwas severed ماwhat يَفصِلُit severs
Blood cannot be seen upon its blade,
The blade cannot make blood visible.
As though what it severs had never been severed.
What parts is like what never leaves.
