وقفتُI stood علىat عباءʿAbāʾ (uncertain reading) والجزعُand the valley bend بينناbetween us
لأنضُرso I may look (likely لأنظر) منof; from نارa fire علىat البُعدِa distance تُوقَدُit is kindled
I stood at ʿAbāʾ, with the valley bend between us,
I stood upon a cloak with grief between us
to glimpse a fire being kindled far away.
To watch a fire lit in the far off distance
تقومit rises بطُولِto the length of الرمحِthe spear إنif هبّتblew الضباthe east wind (likely الصبا)
وعندَand at سكونthe stillness of الريحthe wind تهداit grows calm فتقعدُthen it sits down
It rises a spear’s length when the east wind blows,
It rises spear-like when the wind blows wild
and when the wind is still, it calms and sits down.
And when the wind is still, subsides to rest
فَشبّهتُهاso I likened it فيin الحالتينthe two states بقارىءِto a reciter
إذاwhen اعترضتهُencountered him سجدةُa verse requiring prostration ظلّhe continued يَسجدُhe prostrates
So I likened it, in both states, to a reciter
So I compared it in both states to a reader
who, on encountering a verse of prostration, remains prostrate.
Who bows when shaded by a verse of praise
